Calculate the total PoE power budget required for your IP camera deployment. Determine the right PoE switch model, plan power distribution, and ensure you never overload your network infrastructure.
Understanding PoE standards helps you select the right switch and avoid power shortfalls. Always use actual device specifications when available.
| PoE Standard | Max Power/Port | Typical Use | Camera Types |
|---|---|---|---|
| 802.3af (PoE) | 15.4W | Fixed dome, bullet cameras | 2MP, 4MP cameras without heater |
| 802.3at (PoE+) | 30W | PTZ cameras, IR cameras | 8MP 4K, IR cameras, pan-tilt cameras |
| 802.3bt Type 3 | 60W | High-power PTZ, heated cameras | Speed domes, outdoor heated cameras |
| 802.3bt Type 4 | 90W | Multi-sensor, high-power devices | Multi-sensor panoramic, thermal cameras |
| Camera Type | Typical Power | Max Power | Required Standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed 2MP/4MP (no IR) | 5–8W | 10W | 802.3af |
| Fixed 2MP/4MP (with IR) | 8–12W | 15W | 802.3af |
| Fixed 8MP 4K | 10–15W | 20W | 802.3at |
| PTZ Camera | 15–25W | 30W | 802.3at |
| Outdoor Heated Camera | 25–40W | 60W | 802.3bt Type 3 |
| Multi-sensor Panoramic | 30–60W | 90W | 802.3bt Type 4 |
Always keep total PoE consumption below 80% of the switch's rated budget. This provides headroom for power spikes when cameras activate IR LEDs or heaters simultaneously.
Even if total budget is sufficient, verify per-port power limits. Some budget switches limit each port to 15.4W even if the switch supports PoE+ devices.
Power delivery decreases over cable length. For runs over 80m, expect 10-15% power loss. Use Cat6 or better cable to minimize resistance losses.
Managed switches allow per-port power monitoring and scheduling. You can remotely reboot cameras by cycling PoE power, eliminating the need for physical access.
Select a switch with at least 20% spare port capacity and 30% spare power budget. This allows adding cameras without replacing the switch infrastructure.
Connect PoE switches to a UPS to maintain surveillance during power outages. Size the UPS to support the full PoE load for at least 30 minutes.
